Community
Wey Kayak Club is proud to be an active member of a number or projects which not only benefit the club and its members but also have far reaching benefits for our sport, community and environment. Below are a few examples of the type of projects we support.
Schools Programme
Our school’s programme is a key part of our mission to give everyone the chance to get active, learn new skills and explore the waterways around them. Wey Kayak Club has been delivering beginner kayaking sessions for schools and youth/community groups for more than 10 years and have welcomed over 1500 young people to our club and sport in that time.
We have developed long term relationships with several local primary schools, who return each year for either school time or after school activities for students in Year 5 upwards. A number of these children have joined the club, going on to national and international success, but more importantly everyone leaves with new skills and confidence as well as memories for life.
British Canoeing & Club Partnerships
As one of the largest flat water kayak clubs in the country, we have a long history of promoting our sport both locally and nationally. Several of our members hold senior positions on national sports bodies, working on the strategic development of the sport.
Day to day our experienced coaches have strong and active links with other canoe clubs across the country and are actively engaged in coordinating and hosting inter club events such as Junior Development Squad days
Environment
Wey resides on the banks of the beautiful Wey Navigation, owned and managed by The National Trust. The health of our environment is one of our top priorities, not only our members enjoyment now but for generations to come.
We work in close partnership with several environmental agencies promoting good waterway management and volunteering for projects such invasive plant species removal.
A highlight is our regular ‘River Cleans’, where large numbers of club members, young and old, venture out and collect any rubbish from and along the river, collecting old bikes, numerous bottles and even a ubiquitous shopping trolley, before recycling them appropriately.
Co-founding partners
As a founding member of the Waterside Centre in Guildford, we are intrinsically linked with the Samson Centre and Guildford Sub-Aqua Club with whom we share our facilities. There is close collaboration between us, through sharing of resources, people and time to benefit.
