Club Strategy

Why Wey?

Our purpose is simple, “To improve lives through paddling”

We believe there are 5 core areas that make Wey Kayak Club stand out from other sports and community clubs and have a positive impact on its members, environment and community

Great Paddling

The club supports its members to achieve their aspirations and enjoy their time on and off the water in a safe and fun manner.   We encourage and provide a broad flat-water paddle offering of marathon, sprint and recreational paddling. We promote athlete pathways to develop the necessary skills to encourage lifelong success and participation in our sport.  We provide quality coaching expertise and input, set competitive goals for members and the club, producing elite paddlers alongside recreational ones.  We host events or experiences to engage our members’ interest, whether that our own Hasler, touring trips or international training camps.

Supported People

Our members are our club.  We create a positive and fun environment in which everyone is expected to be actively involved and openly appreciated. We support and invest in members who want to develop their skills to help achieve the clubs’ goals whether that’s obtaining coaching qualifications, cooking or helping with admin.

One Community

Our club is inclusive and sociable, with a strong paddling and volunteer community.    We deliver initiatives and events on and off the water to build and foster an open and supportive community, from weekly club nights to annual parties. We continuously invest in and develop our club facilities, boats equipment to meet the needs of the members.

Shared values

As a club we make decisions and take action based on our shared values of Respect, Ambition, Inclusion, Sportsmanship and Excellence. We are proud of Wey Kayak Club, its history and values and keen to share our club activities and successes with our members and the rest of the world to get our name firmly on the map.

We want to be successful, driven by passion and the opportunity to develop both paddling and life skills.  We are bold, like the challenge to forge our future whilst remembering our past.

Inclusion: We will include everyone

We will encourage a diverse membership, ensure everyone feels welcome and there is opportunity for all.  We will engage with local communities, and the broader paddling community.

Sportsmanship: Living our values through fairness and integrity

We will win with humility, lose with grace, be transparent and open in governance.  Sharing the water with other users and enjoy the experience and have fun.

Excellence: Be consistently great in everything we do

Be the best we can be on and off the water, in managing the club, coach development, interaction with stakeholders.

Strong Partnerships

We promote our club and sport within the local community and work collaboratively with those within the canoeing community to do the same.  We actively engage and support initiatives that make a positive impact on our local environment and community, such as river cleans or charity fund raising events.  We maintain and grow relationships with all our stakeholders and deliver value to members through grants and sponsorship.

All this is underpinned by our foundations of success, of safety and welfare, governance & control, working groups and continuous feedback.

We would not be able to operate legally, morally or with longevity without these in place.  They reflect our desire to be transparent, accountable and able to demonstrate the impact that we make for our members, community and partners.
