Juniors
Development Pathway
Our Junior section is split into ability groups loosely based on marathon divisions (speed). The bulk of the junior beginner and improver groups train under the supervision of a coach once a week on Saturdays with races occurring on Sundays.
As paddlers progress there are opportunities to attend additional mid-week training sessions. During the darker and colder winter months, midweek training tends to move indoors to make use of the clubs’ facilities including paddle machines, gym and hall. There will be a schedule of training during the week for each group, and the group lead is the point of contact for parents.
When ready, junior members are encouraged to enter competitions and excursions appropriate to their experience and their aspirations. There are opportunities to attend skill development days and join training camps at home and even abroad.
Progress through the junior groups is overseen by our BC qualified and DBS checked, coaches, many with an international racing pedigree. Once junior paddlers have progressed to Div 4 (Performance onwards) they will train with adult paddlers for a portion of their sessions (up to 8 a week), learning from many former international paddlers who are keen to pass on their knowledge and experience.
In addition to training, there are opportunities for juniors to build skills through coaching and volunteering at the club. Many do so to fulfil Duke of Edinburgh Award or IB volunteering requirements, many do it for satisfaction and enjoyment whilst gaining recognised qualifications such as Paddlesport Assistant, or Paddlesport Instructor.
