Guide to flat water Kayaking
We specialise in flat water ‘placid water’ canoeing from our clubhouse, using a wide range of canoes and kayaks built specifically for flat-water racing and suited perfectly for the conditions of the river Wey. They are long (5.2m) and narrow with an open cockpit. You can’t roll the boats – if you tip over on the water then you will fall out of the boat.
We use the terms canoe and kayak interchangeably, but they are actually different, depending on the athlete’s position and the type of paddle they use to propel the boat.
In a kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle
In a canoe, the paddler kneels and uses a single-bladed paddle to propel the boat forward
Both the Canoe and Kayak are raced from club to Olympic level, with slight variations in the boat design depending on the discipline or marathon or sprint.
